Into the Wild
In this unit, we will study Into the Wild as a (potentially) Transcendental text. Students will read the essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau and apply the philosophies they learn in those works to the journey Chris McCandless took in the early 1990's. Was Chris' journey Transcendental? Students will craft an answer to this question as they study and discuss McCandless' (perceived) motivations.
Students will also explore their own lifestyle ideals when they write their Ideal Lifestyle Essays. They will have the opportunity to apply the philosophies of transcendentalism to their own lives in order to better understand Transcendentalism and their own priorities.

We may not be using these materials in class, but they are excellent resources to use when studying Into the Wild.
